COMPARISON · NURSERY & SLEEP

Most baby bouncers are bought for roughly six months of use and then spend years in a loft. A wooden rocker is meant to break that pattern. It sits in the living room looking like a piece of furniture rather than a plastic gadget, it has no batteries or motor, and in the best cases it carries on being useful long after your baby has learned to sit up.

The catch is that "wooden rocker" covers very different products. Some are newborn seats on a wooden frame that end at 9kg, exactly like a standard bouncer. Others turn into a toddler rocking chair your child can use for years. One we looked at doesn't rock at all, it bounces, with a beech stand doing the looking-good job. And one is half of a highchair system, so its real value depends on whether you also buy the matching chair.

Prices run from £115 to £339, so it pays to know which of those jobs you are paying for. We compared four wooden rockers you can buy in the UK right now on what actually separates them: what happens after the 9kg limit, the harness, the weight you'll be carrying from room to room, how easy the seat is to wash after a nappy blowout, and whether the rocking motion is something your baby can start on their own.

The short answer: two of these turn into a toddler chair, two stop at 9kg. Which half you want depends on how long you want to keep it and how much floor space you're happy to give it.

How we picked the 4

We started with every rocker and bouncer in our catalogue that uses real wood in its frame or stand and is in stock with a UK retailer we work with. We dropped plastic seats with a "wood effect" finish, and we left out the many toddler rocking animals that are toys rather than baby seats. We then checked each one against manufacturer specifications and safety standards, compared current UK prices, and read through what parents tell us and what they say in owner reviews about the things that matter after the first week: head support, washing, how the motion actually works, and what happens when the baby outgrows it.

No brand paid to be included, and the ratings reflect how well each product does its own job for the family it suits, not just how premium it is.

What to look for in a wooden baby rocker

What happens at 9kg. Every reclined baby seat, wooden or not, has to stop being used as a reclined seat once your baby can sit up unaided or reaches the weight limit, usually around 9kg. The question is whether the frame then does something else. A rocker that converts to a toddler chair can earn its price over several years. One that doesn't is a six-month purchase, however nice it looks.

Rocking versus bouncing. A curved wooden base rocks when the baby or a parent moves it. A sprung steel frame bounces. Babies tend to set off a bouncer with their own kicks quite early, while many parents find a rocker mostly moves when an adult nudges it. Neither has a motor, which some families see as the whole point.

Harness and head support. Check whether the harness is 3-point or 5-point and whether there is any newborn insert. Wooden rockers tend to be minimal, so a very young baby may need repositioning more often than in a padded bouncer.

Washability. A seat cover that comes off and goes in the machine is non-negotiable. Ask whether there is a spare cover or whether a blowout puts the rocker out of action until the fabric dries.

Floor and space. Wooden rockers are made for a flat, hard floor. None of these fold flat for travel, and they should never go on a table, sofa or bed. Weight matters too if you'll be moving it between rooms through the day.

Safety basics. Always use the harness in the baby stage, never leave your baby to sleep in a rocker, and stop using the reclined seat once your baby can sit up on their own.

1. Charlie Crane LEVO Baby Rocker 8.5/ 10 · Best Overall

Charlie Crane LEVO Baby Rocker

The LEVO is the rocker that most people picture when they think of a wooden baby rocker: a single sweeping curve of beech with a padded seat slung across it. It's from a French design studio, it weighs just 3.6kg, and it looks more like a design-shop chair than a baby product. That matters if it's going to live in your sitting room for the next few years.

And it can. With the 3-point harness in place it's a reclined rocker from birth (from about 3.5kg) until your baby can sit up, roughly 7 months or 9kg. Take the harness off and it becomes a small rocking chair the brand says works until around five years old. That second life is why it tops this list. At around £170 for the beech version it's not cheap, but spread over five years it is far better value than a £60 bouncer that is outgrown by summer.

What parents love

  • It looks like furniture. We hear repeatedly from parents that it is more striking in person than in photos, and that visitors assume it is a design piece rather than baby kit.
  • Light enough to carry around. At 3.6kg it moves easily from the kitchen to the living room to the bathroom door while you shower.
  • No batteries, no noise. There's no motor, no music and no app. For parents who want a calm, low-stimulation seat, that is a feature.
  • Machine-washable cover. The whole seat cover comes off for a gentle 30°C wash, and assembly takes minutes with the supplied key.

What to know before you buy

  • No newborn insert. There is no head hugger or infant cushion, so a very floppy newborn may need repositioning.
  • You do the rocking. One parent put it best: "it only rocks when someone rocks it." Older babies with strong kicks can get it going, sometimes harder than expected.
  • One cover only. No spare is included, so a blowout can sideline it until the cover has air-dried. Toy arch and premium seat fabrics cost extra.

Best for

  • Families who want one piece to use from newborn to preschool
  • Design-conscious homes where the rocker lives in the main room
  • Parents who prefer a quiet, unmotorised seat
  • Smaller homes, where a light rocker beats a bulky bouncer

2. Oliver Furniture Wood Baby & Toddler Rocker 8.0/ 10 · Best for the Long Haul

Oliver Furniture Wood Baby & Toddler Rocker

Danish brand Oliver Furniture builds this one from solid oak, and it shows in the price: £339 makes it the most expensive rocker here by a distance. What you get for that is the longest second life. The baby cushion is used up to 9kg, then you swap it for the toddler seat and it becomes a junior rocker rated to 25kg, which retailers put at around seven years old.

It's also the only rocker here where the rocking can be locked. That sounds minor but it's useful for feeding a baby in the seat, or for a toddler climbing in and out. At 5.1kg it is heavier than the LEVO and is designed to stay put, not travel from room to room. It complies with the European standard for reclined cradles, and the baby cushion is removable and machine washable.

What parents love

  • Solid oak build. Parents tell us it feels like proper furniture rather than nursery equipment, the kind of thing you pass to a younger sibling.
  • A toddler rocker to around seven. The 25kg toddler setting is the highest later-life rating of the four.
  • Lockable rocking. Locking the base turns it into a steady seat for feeds or for an older child getting in.
  • Calm Scandi styling. Neutral oak with grey, rose or white cushions suits most living rooms.

What to know before you buy

  • The price. At £339 it costs twice the LEVO. You are paying for oak and longevity, not extra baby features.
  • Lead time. Our retailer ships it direct from the brand partner, quoted at 3-4 weeks, so order well before your due date.
  • Fewer baby-stage details published. UK listings say little about the baby harness or recline, so check the manual if those matter to you.

Best for

  • Families planning more than one child
  • Buyers who want solid wood rather than plywood
  • Parents who want a seat they can lock still for feeding
  • Gift lists where several relatives club together

3. Nuna BRYN Newborn Rocker 8.0/ 10 · Best for BRYN Highchair Owners

Nuna BRYN Newborn Rocker

The BRYN is a different idea. It's a newborn seat made from FSC-certified walnut and maple that sits on its own rocker base on the floor, and it also clips onto Nuna's BRYN wooden highchair, so your baby can join you at the table from birth. On the floor, kickstands under the base switch it from rocking to a steady seat.

It has the most reassuring harness of the four: a padded 5-point harness with Nuna's magnetic buckle, which guides itself shut. The seat pad is a Merino wool and TENCEL blend that comes off for the washing machine. Like the Evolux it is for babies who can't yet sit up, roughly birth to 6 months and up to 9kg, and there's no toddler-chair mode on its own. Its long-term value comes from the BRYN highchair, which is sold separately. At 2.95kg for seat and base it's also the lightest here.

What parents love

  • 5-point magnetic harness. The buckle finds itself, which is easier one-handed with a wriggly baby.
  • Rock or stay still. The kickstands make it a steady seat in seconds, handy for feeds or when your baby is drowsy.
  • Floor to table. If you own the BRYN highchair, your newborn can sit at table height with the family.
  • Premium, washable fabric. The Merino and TENCEL pad is soft, breathable and machine washable.

What to know before you buy

  • Outgrown at around 6 months. On its own it's a short-term seat, like any standard bouncer.
  • Best value only with the highchair. £200 for a six-month floor rocker is steep unless you're buying into the BRYN system.
  • Little real-world feedback yet. It's a newer product, so long-term parent feedback on the rocking base and pad wear is still limited.

Best for

  • Families already buying the Nuna BRYN highchair
  • Parents who want a 5-point harness from day one
  • Anyone who wants a seat that switches between rocking and still

4. Childhome Evolux Bouncer 7.5/ 10 · Best Value

Childhome Evolux Bouncer

The Evolux from Belgian brand Childhome is the honest outlier in this list: it's a bouncer, not a rocker. A sprung steel frame holds a breathable 3D mesh seat, and FSC-certified beech legs give it the warm wooden look that sits nicely next to the others. It moves when your baby moves, and you can bounce it by hand.

At £115 it is the cheapest way to get a wooden-look baby seat, and the mesh is a genuine advantage in summer or for babies who run warm. It uses a soft, padded 3-point harness and is suitable from birth to 9kg. There's a storage pocket at the back, and the mesh and optional jersey covers come off to wash. There's no second life once your baby can sit up, so think of it as a good-looking, well-made bouncer rather than furniture for years.

What parents love

  • Breathable mesh seat. Parents of hot sleepers tell us they like that the seat doesn't trap heat the way thick padding can.
  • Baby can bounce it. The sprung frame responds to kicks, so it moves without you once your baby gets going.
  • Lowest price here. £115 gets you real beech and a clean Scandi look.
  • Easy cleaning. The mesh and optional jersey covers are removable and washable.

What to know before you buy

  • Stops at 9kg. No toddler mode, so expect around six months of use.
  • Only the stand is wood. The frame is steel and the seat is mesh, so it's less "furniture" than the LEVO or Oliver.
  • Mixed age guidance. Some listings quote different age limits, so follow the 9kg limit and stop when your baby can sit up.

Best for

  • Budget-conscious parents who want the wooden look
  • Babies who get hot in padded seats
  • Families who want a seat baby can bounce on their own

What about the Little Hoppa?

You'll see the Little Hoppa wooden bouncer on a lot of nursery wish lists, and it's beautifully made. It's doing a different job, though. It starts at 3 months and runs to 24 months, with a height-adjustable frame for active, upright bouncing, closer to a door bouncer than a newborn rocker. If you want somewhere to put a newborn down, start with one of the four above. If you want an activity bouncer for the second half of the first year and beyond, it's worth a separate look.

How to choose

Choose the Charlie Crane LEVO if you want one piece that does the newborn rocker job and then becomes a rocking chair for years. It's light, it looks lovely, and around £170 spread over five years is excellent value. Just be ready to do most of the rocking yourself in the early weeks.

Choose the Oliver Furniture Wood Rocker if you want solid oak, a toddler stage rated to 25kg, and the option to lock the rocking. It's the most expensive here and has a 3-4 week lead time, but it's built to see more than one child through.

Choose the Nuna BRYN Newborn Rocker if you're buying the BRYN highchair, or you want a 5-point magnetic harness and a seat that switches between rocking and still. On its own it's a six-month seat, so its value depends on the highchair.

Choose the Childhome Evolux if your budget is closer to £100, your baby runs warm, or you'd like a seat they can bounce themselves. It's a bouncer with a beech stand rather than a rocker, and it stops at 9kg.
