Crib Mattresses by Budget: Is a £75 Mattress Worth 4x the Price?

We compared three bedside crib mattresses at £18, £50 and £75 to find out what each tier actually gets you in materials, breathability and value.

COMPARISON · NURSERY & SLEEP

Your bedside crib probably came with a basic foam mattress. It meets safety standards, it fits the crib, and your baby will sleep on it perfectly well. So why do some parents spend four times as much on a natural alternative?

We compared three crib mattresses across three price tiers to find out what you actually get at each level, and whether the upgrade makes a real difference to sleep quality, breathability and peace of mind. We looked at materials, safety certifications, real parent feedback and long-term value to help you decide where your money is best spent.

The short answer: every mattress here is safe. The difference is in the materials inside, how they regulate temperature, and how long they hold their shape. Whether that matters depends on your priorities and your budget.

How we picked the three

We started with the most-added crib mattress on BubsNest registries and built outward from there, selecting one product at each price tier: budget foam, mid-range natural fibre and premium organic. All three hold valid British Standard certifications for infant mattresses and are sold through retailers with active affiliate programmes. We cross-referenced parent feedback from forums, reviews and our own community to capture real-world opinions on comfort, breathability and durability.

What to look for in a crib mattress

Every mattress your baby sleeps on needs to be firm, flat and snug-fitting, with no gaps wider than 3 cm between the mattress edge and the crib sides. Beyond those non-negotiables, here is what separates budget from premium.

Materials matter, but not always how you think. Polyurethane foam is the most common filling in budget crib mattresses. It is lightweight, firm and meets all relevant safety standards. Natural alternatives like coconut coir and wool offer better breathability and temperature regulation, but they cost more and do not automatically make a mattress safer.

Breathability and temperature regulation. Babies cannot regulate their own body temperature well, so a mattress that stays cool is genuinely valuable. Foam mattresses rely on mesh covers and ventilation channels. Natural fibre mattresses use materials like wool and coir that passively wick moisture and dissipate heat.

Washability. A mattress with a removable, machine-washable cover saves time and effort. Some premium mattresses sacrifice this for natural materials that cannot be machine-washed, requiring a separate waterproof protector instead.

Chemical content. Standard foam mattresses use chemical fire retardants to meet safety standards. Some parents prefer mattresses that pass fire tests using natural materials like wool, which is inherently flame-resistant. Both approaches are safe, but families with sensitivity concerns may value the chemical-free route.

Fit and compatibility. Crib mattresses are not universal. Check your crib's internal dimensions and buy accordingly. A mattress sold as "compatible with SnuzPod" will not fit a Chicco Next2Me. Always verify the exact size before ordering.

1. SnuzPod2 Crib Mattress 7.5/ 10 · Best Value

SnuzPod2 Crib Mattress

The mattress that comes with your SnuzPod2, and the one most parents never think to replace. At £18 it is the most affordable option on this list, and for good reason: it is a straightforward polyurethane foam mattress with a 3D breathable mesh cover. Nothing fancy, nothing to worry about.

It weighs just 1 kg, fits the SnuzPod2 precisely (36.5 x 80.5 cm) and the cover comes off for a 40 C machine wash. It complies with BS EN 16890:2017, the current British Standard for infant sleep surfaces. For a mattress your baby will use for roughly six months, that is a lot of value for very little money.

What parents love

  • Affordable and functional. At under £20, it is one of the cheapest crib mattresses available and does exactly what it needs to do.
  • Lightweight. At 1 kg, it is easy to lift out for cleaning or airing. One parent told us: "I could pop it out with one hand while holding the baby, which you cannot do with the heavier natural ones."
  • Machine-washable cover. The polyester cover removes easily and washes at 40 C, higher than many natural alternatives.
  • Perfect fit. Designed specifically for the SnuzPod2 with no gaps or overhang.

What to know before you buy

  • Not waterproof. You will need a separate mattress protector (around £10 to £15) to guard against accidents.
  • Foam can compress. Polyurethane foam may lose firmness over extended use, though this is less of a concern when the mattress is only used for six months.
  • Synthetic materials. The foam filling uses chemical fire retardants to meet safety standards. Safe, but worth knowing if you prefer chemical-free options.

Best for

  • Parents who want a reliable, certified mattress at the lowest price
  • Second-time parents reusing a SnuzPod2
  • Anyone who plans to use the crib for under six months

2. Tutti Bambini CoZee Coir Fibre Mattress 7.5/ 10 · Best Natural Mid-Range

Tutti Bambini CoZee Coir Fibre Mattress

The CoZee Coir sits in the sweet spot between budget foam and full premium. Its filling combines coconut coir fibre with pure wool and natural latex, wrapped in a herringbone cotton twill cover. That is a genuinely different material profile from the foam mattresses in this price range, and it shows in how the mattress feels and performs.

Coconut coir acts like thousands of tiny natural springs, providing firm support without the synthetic feel of foam. The wool layer adds temperature regulation, wicking moisture away from your baby's skin. At £50, you get natural materials and a cotton cover for roughly three times the budget option.

What parents love

  • Natural materials at mid-range prices. Coir, wool and latex filling with a cotton cover, not the synthetic polyester found in most budget mattresses.
  • Temperature regulation. A parent shared: "My baby seemed to sleep more settled on the coir than the foam one that came with the crib. Less sweaty head in the morning."
  • Sturdy and supportive. Parents consistently describe the coir mattress as solid and well-made, with a firmness that feels reassuring.

What to know before you buy

  • Only fits the CoZee range. At 83 x 52 cm, this mattress is designed exclusively for Tutti Bambini CoZee bedside cribs.
  • Coir feels different. The texture is noticeably different from foam. We hear from some parents that it takes a few days to feel comfortable with how it feels under the sheet.
  • Lower wash temperature. The cover washes at 30 C only, compared to 40 C for the Snuz foam option.

Best for

  • CoZee crib owners who want to upgrade from the stock foam mattress
  • Parents who want natural materials without paying premium prices
  • Eco-conscious families looking for a middle ground

3. The Little Green Sheep Natural Crib Mattress 8.5/ 10 · Best Overall

The Little Green Sheep Natural Crib Mattress

The Little Green Sheep is the name parents encounter whenever they search for natural baby mattresses, and for good reason. This crib mattress is handmade using four natural ingredients: coconut coir fibre, natural latex from the Hevea tree, hypoallergenic wool and a luxury herringbone cotton cover. No polyurethane foam, no chemical fire retardants, no synthetic fillings.

At £75, it costs more than four times the budget option. What that money buys is genuinely different construction. The coconut coir core, bonded with natural latex, creates a firm yet responsive sleep surface. The wool lining regulates temperature naturally, keeping baby cool in summer and warm in winter. And the entire mattress passes fire safety standards without a single chemical spray, because wool is inherently flame-resistant.

What parents love

  • Completely natural. Parents we hear from regularly cite the chemical-free construction as their primary reason for choosing this mattress. One parent put it best: "Knowing she is sleeping on coconut and wool rather than foam and chemicals just feels right."
  • Excellent temperature regulation. The combination of coir and wool keeps the mattress cool. Parents report noticeably less sweaty heads compared to foam alternatives.
  • Proven brand. The Little Green Sheep has been making natural baby mattresses for over 15 years, and their reputation with parents is consistently strong.
  • Handmade quality. The build quality is noticeably higher than mass-produced foam alternatives. It holds its shape well and feels substantial.

What to know before you buy

  • Cover is not removable. You cannot take the cover off for machine washing. Sponge clean only, which means you need a waterproof mattress protector (sold separately at around £20).
  • Total cost is higher than it looks. At £75 plus £20 for the protector, you are looking at £95 total, over five times the budget option.
  • Six-month lifespan in a crib. If your baby moves to a cot at four to six months, the per-month cost is significant. This mattress makes more financial sense if used for the full six months.

Best for

  • Parents who prioritise natural, chemical-free materials
  • Families with babies who run warm or have sensitive skin
  • First-time parents willing to invest in peace of mind
  • SnuzPod2 owners looking for the best possible upgrade

How to choose

If budget is the priority, the SnuzPod2 Crib Mattress at £18 is a perfectly safe, certified mattress that does its job well. Your baby will sleep safely on it. The money you save could go towards a good mattress protector and an extra set of fitted sheets.

If you want natural materials without the premium price, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Coir at £50 gives you coconut coir, wool and cotton for roughly three times the budget option. It is a genuine step up in materials, though it only fits the CoZee crib range.

If you want the best available, the Little Green Sheep Natural at £75 is a handmade, fully natural mattress with no chemical fire retardants. The materials, construction and brand reputation justify the price if natural sleep surfaces are important to you.

One thing worth remembering: your baby will use this mattress for roughly six months. A £75 mattress works out at about £12.50 per month. An £18 mattress works out at £3 per month. Both are safe. The question is simply how much the materials inside matter to you.
