The Long-Haul Wishlist: Baby Gear That Earns Its Keep for Years
Babies outgrow things at a rude pace. Here is the kit that keeps up with them, from cot beds to highchairs, and why it belongs on your wishlist.
Here is a sum worth doing before you add a single thing to your wishlist. A £40 newborn bath used for four months works out at roughly 33p a bath. A bath that lasts until your toddler is splashing about at 18 months? Often less per use, and one less thing gathering dust in the loft. 🧮
Cost-per-use is the quiet maths behind every good baby wishlist. Babies outgrow things at a frankly rude pace, so the kit that keeps up with them is worth its weight in gold.
There is a lovely bonus, too. When friends and family club together on something that lasts, they get to see their gift in action for years, not weeks. Every time Grandma visits, there is her highchair at the table.
So how do you spot long-haul kit? Three quick tests:
- Does it adjust, convert or change shape as your baby grows?
- Will it still be useful (and still look nice) when your baby is two?
- Could it be handed down to a sibling or cousin afterwards?
Two or three yeses and you have a winner. Here is how that plays out, one piece of kit at a time.
The Cot Bed
A Moses basket or bedside crib is brilliant for the early months. But somewhere around six months your baby will need a bigger sleep space, and that is where a cot bed earns its place.
A cot bed starts life as a standard cot, then the sides come off and it becomes a toddler bed. One frame, one mattress size, roughly three years of use. Compared with buying a cot and then a separate toddler bed, the saving adds up fast.
Things to look for:
- Several base heights, so you are not bending double to lift a newborn, and the base can drop once they learn to pull up
- A mattress that fits snugly, with no gaps around the edges
- Under-bed storage, because you will never, ever have enough
The Love For Sleep LEVI is a pine 2-in-1 cot bed with three base heights that converts into a toddler bed. It comes with a quilted foam mattress and has a drawer on wheels underneath, perfect for spare sheets and sleeping bags.
The Highchair
Most highchairs are designed for the weaning months and quietly retire once your little one can sit at the table. A grow-with-me highchair is different. The seat and footrest move up and down the frame, so it goes from baby seat to toddler chair to "big kid at the table" chair.
Wooden designs tend to hold up best. They wipe clean, survive years of banana-smearing, and can be handed down without looking tired. The one in our photo has clearly fed a few children!
The KAOS KLAPP is handmade from FSC-certified beech or oak and designed to last the whole of childhood. This set includes the safety rail, tray and harness for the baby stage. The built-in step ladder means toddlers can climb up and down by themselves, which is great for their independence and even better for your back.
The Sleeping Bag
Baby sleeping bags have a sneaky habit of multiplying. A lighter tog for summer, a heavier one for winter, then the whole lot again in the next size up. It is easy to own six without noticing.
All-season bags made with merino wool are designed to help regulate temperature across the year, so you need fewer of them. They cost more upfront, but if one bag does the job of two, the maths comes out in your favour.
Always follow the manufacturer's guidance on room temperature and what to dress your baby in underneath. If you are unsure, your health visitor is a great person to ask.
The Merino Kids All Seasons Go Go Bag pairs a superfine merino lining with an organic cotton outer. It has a travel vent too, so it works with a car seat or pushchair harness. A gorgeous pick for a grandparent who wants to give something special.
The Changing Bag
Confession time. Plenty of us bought a changing bag covered in pastel bunnies, then quickly realised we did not want to carry it anywhere. 🙈
The best changing bags do not really look like changing bags at all. A convertible backpack you will happily keep using once the nappy days are over is a much better long-term bet. Think work bag, gym bag or weekend bag that just happens to have a bottle pocket.
The Babymel Sammi Eco Convertible Backpack is made from recycled plastic bottles and can be worn four ways: backpack, shoulder, crossbody or handheld. It has six pockets, an insulated bottle holder and a washable changing mat. In plain black, it will not look out of place on the commute years from now.
The Baby Bath
Newborn baths are famous for living in the bathroom for about four months and then the loft for about four years. A bath that adapts as your baby grows changes that story.
Look for one with a newborn support, a stand that puts it at a comfortable height for your back, and a fold-flat design for when it is not in use.
The COOSEYA 3-in-1 Foldable Baby Bath comes with a stand and a soft support cushion for the newborn stage, and is designed to take your baby through to around 18 months. It folds down for storage and trips away, which makes it handy for the grandparents' house too.
Putting It All on Your Wishlist
Long-haul kit usually costs more upfront, which is exactly why it suits a wishlist so well. A few tips:
- Use group gifting for the bigger pieces, so several people can chip in towards a cot bed or highchair
- Add a note explaining why you chose it ("we want this to last until they are three!"). People love knowing the thinking behind a gift
- Keep some smaller, affordable items on there too, so everyone can find something in their budget
You can build yours in a few minutes on BubsNest, adding items from any shop you like.
Fewer things, used for longer. Your loft, your bank balance and the planet will all thank you. 💛
