Silver Cross Motion 3 vs Cosatto All in All Rotate: Only One Fits a Car Without ISOFIX

Two rotating birth-to-12 car seats, both rear-facing to 18kg. The £225 Silver Cross is the newer R129 seat with a full 360° spin, but the £299.95 Cosatto is the one that belt-fits in a car without ISOFIX.

COMPARISON · ON THE GO

An all-in-one car seat makes one big promise: buy once, at birth, and you never stand in a shop comparing car seats again until your child is roughly 12. That is a lot of trust to put in one purchase, and it is why the details matter more here than with an infant carrier you will sell on at 15 months.

The Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 and the Cosatto All in All Rotate both make that promise, both keep your baby rear-facing until about 18kg, and both swing round towards the open door so you are not twisting your back to buckle a wriggling toddler. On paper they look like rivals. In practice they are built for different cars and different families.

The Motion 3 is a modern R129 (i-Size) seat on a built-in rotating ISOFIX base. It is £225 at the moment, down from a £275 to £295 list price, and it comes with a summer liner, sunshade and belt pad in the box. The Cosatto is an older R44 design that has one trick the Silver Cross cannot match: it can be fitted with the car's own seat belt in every stage, not just ISOFIX. It also costs £299.95 and is now in its last stock, because Cosatto has moved its range on to newer i-Size versions.

So the real question is not "which seat is better" in the abstract. It is "does your car have ISOFIX, and will this seat ever need to go in a car that does not?" We pulled together the published specs, retailer listings and what parents tell us about living with each seat day to day, and the answer splits cleanly.

Lil' Bubba's verdicts

How we picked the 2

We started from the all-in-one rotating seats that parents add to their Nests most often and that our partner retailers can actually ship today. Both seats here are sold by UK retailers we work with and both cover the full birth-to-12 span with extended rear-facing, which rules out the many "0 to 4 years" rotating seats that look similar in a shop. We then compared the published specifications, the fitting instructions and the long-run feedback parents share with us about installation, everyday loading and what wears thin after a year or two. We do not accept payment to feature a product, and the scores reflect what we would tell a friend.

What to look for in an all-in-one car seat

R129 vs R44. R129, often called i-Size, is the newer regulation. Seats are chosen by your child's height rather than weight, side-impact testing is mandatory, and babies must stay rear-facing until at least 15 months. R44 seats were tested under the older weight-group system. An R44 seat is still legal to use, but if you are buying new and your car has ISOFIX, R129 is the more future-proof choice.

How it fits your car. ISOFIX is quick and very hard to get wrong, with click indicators that turn green. Belt fitting is slower and depends on your car's belt geometry, but it means the seat can go almost anywhere. Seats with a support leg also need a solid floor under them, so check for underfloor storage boxes in the footwell.

Rear-facing limit. Both seats here stay rear-facing to about 18kg, which for most children is around four. That is the single biggest safety feature of this category, and the reason they are bulky.

Rotation. A seat that turns to the door saves your back every single day. A full 360° spin also lets you switch between rear and forward-facing without refitting.

Size and weight. All-in-one seats are big. In a small hatchback a rear-facing seat can push the front passenger seat forward noticeably. These seats are designed to be fitted once and left in place, so if you swap cars every weekend, factor that in.

Always check your car. Before you buy either seat, look up your car on the brand's vehicle fitting list and, ideally, try the fit in person.

1. Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 8.5/ 10 · Best Overall

Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 Car Seat

The Motion 3 is the third version of a seat that has quietly become one of the most recommended all-in-ones in the UK. It is approved to R129 for children from 40cm to 145cm, keeps them rear-facing until 18kg, then turns forward and eventually converts to a high-back booster that uses the car's belt. The integrated base clicks onto your ISOFIX points, a support leg drops to the floor, and red and green indicators tell you when everything is locked.

The update for this version is mostly about comfort: new waffle jersey and bamboo-blend fabrics for airflow, a reversible leakproof liner, and an "Ultimate Comfort Kit" with a summer liner, window sunshade and a seat belt pad for the booster years. At £225 it is currently cheaper than the Cosatto by £75, and it comes with Silver Cross's crash replacement and recycling scheme.

What parents love

  • The spin. The base turns a full 360°, smoothly and with one hand. One parent told us: 'it can easily be done one handed while holding your child if needed', which is exactly the situation you are in at a petrol station with a sleepy baby on your hip.
  • Hard to fit wrong. ISOFIX arms, a support leg and colour indicators mean installation takes minutes and you can see it is right. No threading belts, no guessing about tension.
  • Adjust with your child in it. Headrest height and recline can be changed while your child is sitting in the seat, so growth spurts do not mean unbuckling.
  • Extras you would buy anyway. A summer liner, sunshade and belt pad come in the box, so there is less to buy separately, and the leakproof liner is a godsend in the potty-training months.

What to know before you buy

  • It is heavy and stays put. At roughly 14.5kg this is not a seat you will move between cars each weekend. A parent shared that their child gets 'nap trapped' because, unlike an infant carrier, you cannot lift the seat out with a sleeping baby in it.
  • ISOFIX only. There is no seat belt fitting option for the harness stages. If your car, or a grandparent's car, has no ISOFIX points, this seat will not go in it.
  • Bulky in small cars. Rear-facing in a compact hatchback, it can eat into front passenger legroom, and two side by side leave little room in the middle.

Best for

  • Families with one main ISOFIX car who want to buy one seat for the whole journey
  • Parents with back trouble or a C-section recovery who need the seat to turn to them
  • Anyone who wants the newer R129 standard at a mid-range price
  • Summer babies and hot cars, thanks to the breathable fabrics and summer liner

2. Cosatto All in All Rotate 7.5/ 10 · Best for Cars Without ISOFIX

Cosatto All in All Rotate Group 0+/1/2/3 Car Seat

Cosatto's All in All Rotate is approved to the older R44/04 standard as a Group 0+/1/2/3 seat, covering birth to 36kg. It stays rear-facing to 18kg, can go forward-facing in harness from 9kg, then becomes a belted booster from 15kg up to 36kg. When you are parked, the seat swivels towards the door for loading, then locks back into its driving position.

Its standout feature is flexibility of fitting. Depending on the stage, it can go in with ISOFIX and a support leg, or with the car's own seat belt plus the support leg, and in booster mode with the belt alone or with ISOFIT connectors. That makes it one of the few rotating all-in-ones you can put in a car without ISOFIX. It also comes in Cosatto's trademark bold prints, and carries a four-year guarantee. The catch is the price, £299.95, and the fact that this R44 version is now in its last stock as Cosatto moves to i-Size models.

What parents love

  • Fits almost any car. Belt fitting in every stage means it can move into an older car, a second car or a grandparent's runaround. We hear repeatedly from parents that this is the reason they chose it over a sleeker ISOFIX-only seat.
  • Easy loading. The swivel-to-door action means no leaning across the back seat to fasten the harness, a big help with a heavy toddler.
  • Five recline positions. Plenty of options for a newborn lie-flat angle and a more upright toddler position, plus a newborn insert and padded liner.
  • The prints and the guarantee. Parents like that it does not look like every other grey seat, and a four-year guarantee is generous for a seat you will use for a decade.

What to know before you buy

  • Older safety standard. R44 is still legal, but it is the previous generation of testing. If your car has ISOFIX, an R129 seat is the more future-proof buy.
  • Belt fitting takes care. A parent shared that it went in easily, but advised reading both the seat and car manuals two or three times first. The support leg also makes it semi-universal, so check your car is on the fitting list.
  • Last stock and a higher price. At £299.95 it costs £75 more than the Motion 3 right now, and with the line being replaced, colour choice is limited to what retailers have left.

Best for

  • Cars without ISOFIX points, or households sharing a seat between cars
  • Grandparents doing regular nursery runs in an older car
  • Parents who want bold, characterful fabric instead of grey
  • Families who value a long guarantee on a long-term purchase

What about Cosatto's newer i-Size rotating seats?

If you love the Cosatto look but want the newer R129 standard, Cosatto now makes i-Size rotating versions in the All in All range. They move to height-based sizing like the Silver Cross, but check the fitting method carefully: the belt-fit flexibility that makes the original All in All Rotate unusual is not something to assume carries over. Look at the label for "R129" and at the fitting list for your car before you buy.

How to choose

Choose the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 if your main car has ISOFIX and the seat will live in it. You get the newer R129 standard, a genuine 360° spin you can work one-handed, comfort extras in the box and a lower price today. It is the better seat for most families, which is why it takes Best Overall.

Choose the Cosatto All in All Rotate if any car this seat needs to go in lacks ISOFIX, or if you know it will be shuttled between a parent's car and a grandparent's. Belt fitting in every stage is its unique strength. Just be sure you are comfortable with an R44 seat and with paying more, and buy while stock lasts.

Whichever you pick, try the fit in your own car if you can, and keep your child rear-facing for as long as the seat allows.
