Double the Bump, Double the Party: Throwing a Twin Baby Shower

Hosting a shower for a mum-to-be expecting twins? Here is how to time it, keep her comfy, write a gift list that thinks in pairs and gift the thing twin parents need most: extra hands.

More than half of all twins arrive before 37 weeks. 👶👶

That one fact changes everything about planning a twin baby shower. The date, the guest list, the gifts, even where the mum-to-be sits. A shower for one baby can happily wait until the final stretch. A shower for two really can't.

So if you're hosting for a friend, sister or daughter who is expecting double, here's how to throw a party that's twice the fun and half the stress.

Pick an earlier date than you think

For a single baby, most showers land somewhere around 32 to 36 weeks. For twins, aim earlier. Lots of hosts go for somewhere between 26 and 30 weeks, when the bump is big enough to celebrate but she can still get up off the sofa without a crane.

Twin pregnancies often come with extra scans and appointments, so check her diary before you book anything. And have a quiet plan B. If the babies decide to show up before the party, the shower can become a "welcome home" afternoon instead, with gifts dropped at the door.

Keep it short, too. Two to three hours is plenty. Growing two babies is tiring work, and she'll love you for wrapping up while she's still smiling.

Make the guest of honour comfortable

It sounds obvious, but it's the bit hosts forget most. Give her the comfiest chair in the room, a footstool, cushions behind her back and a glass of water that magically refills.

  • Hold it close to her home if you can, so there's no long car journey.
  • Choose a venue with a loo nearby. Trust us.
  • Ground floor if possible. Stairs at 28 weeks with twins are nobody's idea of fun.
  • Serve snacks that are easy to eat sitting down, plus something fizzy and alcohol-free that feels like a treat.

Hosting at her house? Lovely, but make sure she isn't the one tidying up afterwards. Assign two guests to clean-up duty before the cake is even cut.

Write a gift list that thinks in pairs

This is where twin showers really differ. Well-meaning guests either buy two of absolutely everything, or buy one cute outfit and forget there's a second baby entirely. Neither helps much.

The fix is a shared wishlist, sorted into what's needed in pairs and what's needed just once. Set one up on BubsNest and pop the link on the invite. Guests can see what's already been bought, so nobody turns up with the third identical bouncer.

One gift twin parents rave about is a proper twin feeding pillow. It's wider than a standard nursing cushion, so both babies can be supported at once, whether that's tandem breastfeeding or bottle feeding two hungry mouths side by side. Feeding together can claw back a lot of time in those early weeks.

Then there's the classic "pair" gift: two bouncers. Ask any twin parent and they'll tell you the same thing. Two safe spots on the floor to pop the babies down is what lets you make a cuppa, answer the door or eat lunch with both hands. Bouncers are for awake, supervised time and never for sleep, but for those little windows they're gold.

Sweet idea: two friends buy one each in matching colours and wrap them together with one big bow.

Club together for the big-ticket stuff

A twin pushchair is one of the biggest single costs on the list, and it's exactly the sort of thing a group of friends can split. Ten guests chipping in around £60 each gets you a very long way.

The big choice is side-by-side or tandem. Side-by-side models keep both babies level and tend to steer nicely, but they're wider, so measure the front door first. Tandems are slimmer but longer. Have a gentle chat with the parents-to-be before anyone orders, because this one is a very personal choice.

Another brilliant group gift, if she plans to express, is a double electric breast pump. Pumping both sides at once halves the time, and with two babies to feed, time is the scarcest thing in the house. Only add this if she's said she wants one. It's not a surprise sort of present!

Games with a two-of-everything twist

No need to reinvent the shower games. Just give them a twin spin. 🎈

  • Double trouble quiz. Questions about famous twins from film, pop and sport. Bonus round: match the grown-up guests to their own baby photos.
  • Name the pair. Guests suggest matching name combos. The silliest pairing wins a prize, and the parents might secretly steal one.
  • Tandem nappy race. One guest, two dolls, one minute. Fastest double change wins. Fair warning, it's much harder than it looks.
  • Predictions cards. Birth date, who arrives first, whose hair is curlier. Seal them up and open them once the babies are home.

Give the gift of extra hands

Here's the present nobody can order online, and twin parents need it more than anything: time.

Pass round a sign-up sheet at the shower with real, specific offers. Not "let me know if you need anything", but things like:

  • "I'll bring a home-cooked dinner every Thursday for the first month."
  • "I'll do a big supermarket shop in week two."
  • "I'll come round on a Sunday morning so you can both sleep for three hours."
  • "I'll take the washing home and bring it back folded."

Write them on pretty cards and pop them in a box for the parents to cash in. Of everything given at a twin shower, those little cards are often the ones remembered most fondly.

Little touches that make it feel special

  • Celebrate both babies. If the parents know the sexes or have names picked, decorate for two distinct little people rather than one big bump.
  • Invite the partner. Twin parenting is a team sport from day one, so a co-ed shower makes lots of sense.
  • Stay flexible. If she's been told to rest or is feeling rough, move it online or bring the shower to her sofa with a handful of close friends.
  • Keep a gift log. Ask one person to note who gave what, so thank-you messages are easy later. Nobody expects them quickly with newborn twins.

Twins mean double the nappies, double the night feeds and, yes, double the love. A shower that's well timed, comfy and full of practical help is the best send-off you can give.
